THE HELP FILES: NEW PROJECT GUIDE
Once you have secured a deposit, the next step is to write the copy for your website. Many clients do not know where to start. Don’t be overwhelmed, take it page by page and remember – a website is a work in progress. Try not to get too focused on writing “the perfect text”. It will require tweaks and modifications in the future as your business grows and changes.
Try to imagine the purpose and function of each page (information giving, selling, etc) and keep in mind that people often “skim read” websites. A mix of text, photos, and/or videos is ideal for the website to keep to interesting and informative.
1. Help users find what they are looking for – easily
At first glance, make the following clear: your business’ name, what you do/who you are, what you can provide for the user. The user needs to find the information they are searching for quickly and easily, or else they could leave the site.
2. Write using phrases / words your potential customers are looking for
Think about the words users would type to find your pages and include those words on your site. Keep it simple and weave familiar keywords into your text without any noticeable difference to quality or “keyword stuffing”. As a result, your text is still easy to read, but uses specific terms which will help the site be found.
3. “Content is king”
Try to provide high-quality useful content on your pages, especially your homepage. The text on each of your pages can help with your search engine ranking, so it makes sense to put some effort into it.
