What is a sidebar and how do I edit/add widgets?

THE HELP! FILES

Some of the pages on your website will use a right or left column (also known as the “sidebar“) to display certain bits of information or subnavigation menus.  This information is called “widgets” and is found in a separate area of your website.

WHAT IS A WIDGET?

Widgets require no code experience or expertise. They can be added, removed, and rearranged under the Dashboard > Appearance >Widgets.. You will see a list of “Available Widgets” on the left and on the right will be your “Sidebar“, which contains widgets that are actively used on your website.

NOTE: The title of your widget sidebar will vary depending on your theme (ask us for details). And you can have multiple widgets used in a sidebar. For this example, the sidebar is simply called “Page Sidebar” and we can see that the website uses a Text widget titled “What’s New”.

If your WordPress theme has been created using widgets, you can edit them by following the steps below:

HOW TO EDIT YOUR SIDEBAR (AND THE WIDGETS IN IT)

wordpress13

  1. Once you have logged in to your WordPress Dashboard using your username and password, click on the “Appearance” button
  2. Choose the “Widgets” option
  3. You will now see a list of available widgets, and on the right hand side of the page, your “Main Sidebar” (this title can vary, depending on your theme). This is the right or left hand column that appears on your website or blog.
  4. Listed under the sidebar are the widgets that are currently active in use on your sidebar. Click the down arrows on each widget to view and edits. Once you edit this widget, it will automatically update in the sidebar section of your website or blog.
  5. To add or remove a widget to your sidebar, simply drag and drop into or from the Main Sidebar section.

ADDING A NEW WIDGET TO YOUR SIDEBAR

  1. Login to your Dashboard > Appearance > Widgets.
  2. You will see a list of 20 or so “Available Widgets” on the left and on the right will be your “Sidebar“, which contains widgets that are actively used on your website. The title of your widget sidebar will vary depending on your theme (ask us for details).
  3. To add a new widget, simply choose a Widget from the “Available Widgets” and drag it to the sidebar where you wish it to appear. There might be more than one sidebar option, so ask us if you need help.
  4. Once in place, WordPress automatically updates the Theme.
