How to Resize your image smaller using Pixlr

THE HELP! FILES

Sometimes photos that you want to use on your WordPress site need to be resized before you can upload them. This can happen if you have a very large photo (good quality) and it exceeds the upload size for WordPress. But instead of purchasing Photoshop, we encourage clients to use Pixlr – an online editor that has many of the same features of Photoshop, but it’s free!

USING THE PHOTO EDITOR PIXLR
  1. Open the website www.pixlr.com
  2. From the main page, scroll down to see your selections. Click the Launch Web App button under “PIXLR EDITOR
  3. Click “Open Image from computer” and browse to the photo that you want to edit. It will open automatically in your screen.
HOW TO RESIZE AN IMAGE
  1. From the top black navigation bar, Click “Image” > “Image Size“. A little box will pop up telling you big your photo is. Our example photo is 3072 x 2048 which is VERY large. Web images need to be a smaller size so they download quickly. If you aren’t sure what size to choose, 800 pixels wide is a good size for most large images (eg. for photo galleries)
  2. Enter in your desired width (Eg. 800 pixels) and then your Height will automatically change so the photo remains in scale. Click “ok” Your photo has now been resized!

HOW TO SAVE YOUR NEW IMAGE
  1. From the top black navigation bar, Click “File” > “Save“. You can change the name of the photo, if you like. Leave the format setting on JPEG and lower the quality to 45 (this is adequate for web files).
  2. Click “ok” and save the file wherever you want on your computer. Now you are done.
